Roborovski Dwarf Hamster

Breed Overview

The Roborovski dwarf hamster (Phodopus roborovski), commonly referred to as “Robo,” is the smallest breed in the hamster family. Measuring just about 2 inches (5 cm) in length, their diminutive size is packed with remarkable energy and adorable traits. Their miniature stature and vibrant personality make them a favorite among pet lovers.

Roborovski hamsters have gray fur with faint yellow markings, while their underbellies are covered in white fluff. These hamsters feature round, endearing ears and distinctive white “eyebrows” above their eyes. Males are generally slightly larger than females, though the differences are minimal, and both share equal levels of cuteness.
Native to the steppes and semi-desert regions of Russia, Mongolia, and China’s Xinjiang, these tiny creatures have adapted to a variety of living conditions. Roborovski hamsters prefer solitude, being timid and skittish in their natural habitats.
For safe housing, it is recommended to use an aquarium with a mesh lid, as Roborovski hamsters can easily escape from traditional wire cages. Temperature control is crucial, with needs for cooling in summer and warmth in winter. Regular grooming is essential to keep their fur smooth and knot-free.
Roborovski hamsters are nocturnal, most active at dusk and dawn. In the wild, they do not stray far from their burrows, typically staying within a 50-meter radius. They are adept at digging tunnels on sandy slopes, with small, inconspicuous entrances usually featuring one or two openings. The burrow system is typically simple and unbranched, with a depth of about 50–100 cm, but expands into a rounded nesting chamber at the bottom. The hamsters collect dry leaves and other materials to make the nest chamber cozy and warm. As for diet, although they eat small amounts, they transport food back to their nest for storage. Their diet includes plant seeds, fruits, tubers, and leaves, and occasionally small insects like beetles. They do not hibernate and remain relatively active throughout the winter.
Roborovski hamsters can breed throughout the year, with a gestation period of about 18 to 24 days. Litters can range from 1 to 9 pups. After birth, the pups require careful nurturing, with the mother hamster taking care of them until they are mature enough to live independently. For keepers, understanding how to provide appropriate food and protection during the pups’ growth is essential.
